I came from Ft. Lauderdale, FL for a visit with my family for my birthday. We had a large party of 9 people and when we called they informed us that they do not take reservations; However, when we arrived they had already set and held a table for us! They immediately knew who I was (the birthday girl) and brought me a mimosa! Not a bad way to start off.. (I was turning 27 by the way). Our server was Michelle and she was an absolute delight. The only down side about her is that shes a Bears fan! ;) Michelle was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to guide myself and my company with ease. I was told to try the shrimp and grits. Now, I am originally from Savannah, Ga so understand my apprehension about ordering such a southern classic... IT. WAS. DELICIOUS!! The portion was big and luckily my grandpa was there to take my leftovers home. It would have been sacrilegious to throw it out! Thank you to Johnny Grits, Michelle and their entire staff for creating such a lovely memory for my birthday and with my family. I will be coming back every time I am in town! Sincerely, Brittany

It was a roll the dice day, and I wanted some place I've not been before... The pointer landed on Johnny Grits. It was close to home, and that made things Easy. We made the short drive to Klosterman and to Johnny Grits. It wasn't terribly busy, and with food this good, I'm Surprised. They're hidden, perhaps that's why, but what ever the reason, the word needs to get out. Granted most days they're only open until 2, but on Thrusday - Saturday they're open until 8. Get there! We were seated immediately, and noticed that the place was Clean and fairly large. The staff was happy and did a lot of work to keep busy. No one was idle or just hanging around. Something you see at places that just don't care. Our Waitress, Renee, was AWESOME. She really seemed to care if we came back in the future. We asked what was good, and she mentioned the Shrimp and Grits.. She RAVED about it. Said that once you had it, you'd come back, you'd crave it. Well, that sold the Husbeast, and he ordered it with the andoullie sausage. Me, I went for the chicken and waffles with 100% maple syrup. Once the order was placed and our coffees were on the table, we didn't wait terribly long. The food was Beautiful when it was presented. My chicken was golden brown and the waffle was light and fluffy.. absolutely delightful. It came to life in my mouth. THe husbeast nodded.. he said to me "Yep, She was right,I'm going to crave this.." and so now I'm going to have to go there on Tuesdays when the shrimp and grits is $2 off! Go and find this little gem, You won't be wasting your time.

I wish I could give this place 3 1/2 stars. 3 seems unfair, but 4 is too high. This place was good but not great. The biscuits and gravy were made on site. The gravy was good, but again not great. We could taste the broth base, giving it a can rather than a home cooked flavor-perhaps unfair on our part to compare it to home made gravy. We also ate eggs Benedict, crab cake eggs Benedict, and chicken eggs Benedict. The crab was again, just ok. The chicken one was really good. Coffee was about average. For the amount of people waiting outside we expected much better. Perhaps we are excessively demanding. The service was fantastic. The waitress, Christina, was very friendly and the place felt welcoming. Our party of four spent $56 plus tip.

Was visiting from out of town and decided to check out the restaurant based on all of the great reviews. Hate to say that we were a little disappointed. On paper the menu looks amazing... but I felt like the execution of the meals were a bit of a miss. Service: The service was pretty good. We walked in and were greeted immediately and shown to a table. The food came out quickly and our server checked on us frequently. I do wish that she knew how to use the Espresso machine. She admittedly told us that she didn't know how to use it and we could tell. We asked for 2 double espressos and mine was filled to the brim that it spilled onto my plate. Food: PANCAKE STUFFED WITH BACON: oddly shaped pancakes with single strips of bacon in the middle. These were ok... i saw bacon and got excited. A pretty basic dish, was hoping that the bacon would've been incorporated a little better... maybe infusing the bacon in the syrup?? Or chopping up the bacon and putting it in the batter then sprinkling some crunchy pieces on top?? I think it would've elevated the dish some. FRIED CHICKEN BENEDICT: this so happened to be the best thing we tried. The fried chicken had great flavor. I was a little unsure about the melted cheddar cheese on top but it worked well with the dish and liked the slices of jalapeño in the cheese. WHITE TRUFFLE GRITS and added andouille sausage: I didn't mind that the grits weren't smooth. But I couldn't really taste the truffle oil and the sausage tasted more like Pepperidge farm store bought stuff. Overall ok food... reasonable prices... decent portion sizes, big enough to share.... good service. ***Side note: I think that the staff... including the management should familiarize themselves with the company's social media pages. We were trying to post food pics on instagram and nobody knew which was the correct page.

Tried the dinner menu and was very disappointed - service was slow and terrible - as asked for an appetizer to come out with dinner, it came out as an appetizer any ways - so we mentioned it - the took it back to the kitchen and then brought it out cold with the main meal :/. I think they should stick to breakfast. So we did a call ahead wait list for Fathers Day, our seats were given to someone else, and instead of being placed next on the list, we would be last on the wait list and starting the clock from zero again. Making total wait time one hour at 1015 am Sorry - I don't give places more than three tries maximum - usually two, but because it was great first time gave it two more tries. That's pretty much it. Enjoy breakfast there, dinner was not worth it, high prices and super slow service.

Delicious, delightful, and dreamy can easily describe my new favorite dining experience. Delicious equals shrimp and grits with andouille sausage, southern sweet potato pancake, mimosas, and southern chicken hash. There is no order of favorites at this place. Everything is oh so good!! Delightful is the service and the atmosphere. Server was attentive, cheery, helpful, and sweet. Thanks Toni for dealing with our loud crazy selves running from the bee who loves mimosas and sweet potato pancakes. Also inside and out, this restaurant has a nice, clean, modern feel, and is dog friendly outside with huge umbrellas for shade. Dreamy best defines Johnny Grits because I will and am dreaming of my next visit here. I am not one to come back to places since there are so many to choose from, but this place is certainly on my best of the best. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They are close to the beach, dog friendly, very organized, and their food is delicious. It is also a laid back place that has homemade red and white sangrias which stare at me, and I will drink next time. This is my new fave dining experience.

Sunday they don't take reservations and between 10am to 1pm usual wait time is 30 minutes. Food is great.... you won't regret waiting for it.

Awesome place in Tarpon a springs to have breakfast and brunch, from "grit skillets" to eggs Benedict, French toasts, Pancakes and more. Kudos to their gluten free options which includes GF Belgium Waffle & GF Pancakes as well as their Special Frittata plus ALL grits skillets options (5). I had their Shrimp N' Grits and my wife tried both Belgium Waffle and Pancakes. Everything was awesome! We sat at the bar! Great staff!

This place is fantastic. Went here two times in my trip down here. Great grits of course and also just southern home cooking. Just had the fried chicken Benedict and the batter was too salty, but I like the idea. Stick with the shrimp and Grits. Their grits and jalapeno was good but I would recommend going with the other choices.

Changed rating to 5 stars from 4. Both times I have been here, had a great meal. The chicken n grits thursday special was a great filling lunch for only 7.95. The staff are very attentive, and everything is very clean and friendly. Would highly recommend giving them a try.

Third times not a charm. Came in 1pm on Sunday to try their lunch. They were packed which is great for them. Started out with tomato soup. Tasted like pureed tomatoes and that's it. Was hoping for some salt or herbs but nope. Came with grilled cheese except the cheese was nasty processed cheese that wasn't even melted. Outside lacked butter so it was just toast with unmelted nasty cheese inside. Lunch I had the fried chicken. They were out of curled fries so I got the regular fries. The fried chicken was hot and coated well but it lacked tons of flavor. The fries are the fries you would eat at busch gardens for 8$.bland straight cut quick to get cold and taste like cardboard fries. Lastly desert had one bite of the peanut butter pie. It was a peanut butter mouse with Graham cracker crust. It was a complete miss. This review just goes to show that they can't all be home runs

Oh I love the south! Everything is cooked in bacon fat or butter. I can feel my arteries clogging just thinking about it. This is the kind of place you go to and the food sits in your belly like a brick and all you want to do is lay on your back like a bear after filling up for the winter! I ordered and ate way too much and was good for the rest of the day after this meal. With a name like Johnny Grits, of course you have to get an order of grits. The question is, which ones do you get? They're dirt cheap, less than $3 for a side order, so you don't feel like you're depriving yourself, yeah! The consistency of the polenta is somewhat thick, and maybe some heavy cream might have given it a more creamy feel. Otherwise, the flavors were good. I got the mushroom with truffle oil grits and the jalapeño cheddar grits. Either bacon bits or bacon fat would have elevated the flavor of the jalapeño cheddar grits. The biscuits and gravy were excellent! The gravy was thick and had just enough salt from the sausage, but the flavor of the sausage wasn't overwhelming. The biscuits were soft and thick enough to hold the gravy. I also ordered the fried chicken Benedict. The fried chicken itself had just enough breading and was tenderized and flattened which was different, but it actually worked well because you could get an equal amount of egg, chicken, and biscuit in one bite without feeling like you were just getting a big hunk of chicken. It was slathered in jalapeño queso as opposed to the traditional hollandaise sauce. I'm not quite sure how I felt about that. I love queso and it tasted good with the chicken, but the hollandaise works better with the egg. Maybe both? The sweet potato pancakes were fluffy and drizzled in caramel sauce, but weren't overwhelmingly sweet. Our server was your stereotypical sweet, hospitable, chatty southern lady. The restaurant itself is bright and open. The decor is simple with its chalkboard walls to display the menu. The bathrooms were also clean and well stocked. The prices are very reasonable. Beer and mimosas are also served for those of you who enjoy a libation as opposed to coffee to get you going in the morning!

Finally made it here! Totally worth the hype totally worth the long wait! Food was excellent and looking forward to returning to try more of what is on the menu. Had the sweet potato pancakes and asked to add chocolate chips. Flavors were sweet and delectable side of grits flavorful and love the rustic Texture. Felt the same way about the biscuit. Watching all the items coming out of the kitchen you know the chefs take pride in their food. Thank you for the bottomless cup of hot and very good coffee. Bringing friends next time we come for breakfast.

This place was amazing. I thought it would a little diner, but it is SO much more. The interior looks brand new. It's very clean and very cute. Whoever writes on their chalk menu boards is quite the artist! Our waitress was also wonderful. Friendly and quick. Couldn't ask for anything better. Now the food....I had the fried chicken Benedict. It was delicious. Buttery soft biscuit, flavorful and juicy fried chicken, eggs, and a jalapeño cheese sauce. It was great! I can't wait to eat my other half for lunch :) They also have a little outdoor area where you can bring your dog. Oh and the prices are really reasonable. I can't wait to try them again for dinner!

I came here during the week for breakfast one day. The shrimp and grits were really really good. I asked them for a taste of their sausage gravy and they happily obliged. It was pretty good. I will be getting that next time.

There is not a lot of culinary creativity in the outskirts of Tampa, but for breakfast and lunch, Johnny Grits is as good as it gets anywhere in the country. It is a cheerily lit place with energetic, helpful wait staff and an eclectic southern menu that will work for the pickiest diner to the most hard core southern cooking snob. The biscuits are perfection. Get the chicken Benedict dish. Do it. The grits are also awesome, and the pancake/waffle options are great too. These people care about food and your loving their food.

  • Xrisa L.

I love this place! Never disappoints and the coffee was really good this morning. Had the fried chicken benedict and substituted the jalapeño cheese sauce for the sausage country gravy. Both are fantastic I've had it both ways. Last week had the fried chicken w/waffle, again another great meal. The batter they use for the fried chicken is very flavorful! Will be back!

My family and I tried this place for breakfast because of the high reviews. I will say this was a one and done. Service was good a little slow but do too it being busy was understandable. What suprised us was the prices extremely high for breakfast. The total bill for 2 adults and 1 kid was $65.00. Food was ok but nothing special.

  • Heather S.

INCREDIBLE! Our breakfast was so delicious I'm confident that anything on the menu would be great. Lots of all natural and gluten free items, drinks in mason jars, & great coffee. Love the decor of the place too - very clean! We had the fried chicken Benedict with the jalapeño cheddar on the side because I'm hesitant of cheese sauces - however, don't be! This was great. The chicken was absolutely perfect, on a biscuit, and potatoes were crispy. I had the sweet potato pancakes which were decadent like dessert. I was expecting more of a shredded potato pancake, but these were still savory with pecans, caramel sauce, and all natural dark amber maple syrup. Definitely try this place! We'll be back!

Johnny Grits is definitely what it's cracked up to be on Yelp. Phenomenal. I went with the shrimp and grits with bacon mixed and sausage and a biscuit on the side. I'm in heaven. Kelli took awesome care of me giving me all sorts of recommendations. She suggested everything that I went with. Johnny Grits is the real deal. Can't wait to come back and discover some other gems here.

This was our first time going, it was a bittersweet experience. The staff is very friendly, food was excellent. The only thing that prevented me from giving it a 5/5 is how long it took to get our food. We were sat and didn't receive our food until 45 min after ordering. In their defense it was extremely busy we were seated immediately after walking in, however on our way out we noticed at least 8+ people waiting outside to be sat.

Seriously, this place has the best shrimp and grits. Ever. In the whole world. My husband, who hated grits, loves it. Honestly, I scrapped the plate clean with my spoon then gazed at the plate, and for a fleeting moment, wondered if it is really such a faux pas to pick it up and lick it... It was that good. It's I-can-die-and-go-to-heaven orgasmic... But if shrimp is not your thing, they have several other grits. At $3 each it makes for a delicious and inexpensive meal. There are plenty other options of breakfast and lunch items. Everything we've tried, including soup, are outstanding. Partly because they use good ingredients. Like organic grits, Vermont maple syrup and natural chicken. Healthy and delicious don't always go together but they find a blissful marriage here. I wish this place is open for longer hours, but heck with food this good, I think the cook deserves a half day off to fish, nap or do whatever he likes.

The food was good. Not great, just average. Having traveled 1300 miles for a family vacation, I was hoping for something that would be memorable. We were seated right away. I'm glad because there wasn't really many people in the restaurant. The waitress was prompt with taking our orders. The wait for the food however was another matter all together. I decided to get the fried chicken benedict, the chef specialty. The food took at least 30 minutes to arrive in not more. The waitress seemed overwhelmed by the few patrons in the restaurant. The chicken was flavorful and the biscuit was flaky. The eggs however were hard and seemed overcooked for eggs benedict style eggs. The final question remains, would I return again. The answer unfortunately is no.

Omg this place is so yummy with great service! The best breakfast I ever had consisted of andouille sausage, carmelized onions and provolone over the most delicious grits. For me, it is always a challenge finding breakfast spots that use quality fresh eggs. I asked for over medium eggs and they were cooked to perfection with rich yolks that were the perfect color. The sweet potato pancakes with pecans and caramel sauce was the best breakfast dessert. You will not regret stopping at this place for a comforting southern breakfast.

I really like Johnny Grits! We have been here 3 times (twice for breakfast and once for lunch) and I have had a good experience ever time. The portions were a good size for the price. The thing that excited me about Johnny Grits is that they served Gluten Free Pancakes. I have been looking for place where they even offered a Gluten Free Pancake option and Johnny did not disappoint - pancakes were huge and served with fruit on top. On their menu they also specify whether something is Gluten Free or Vegetarian, which is great if you have dietary restrictions. The other people I went with had omelets, which they all said were very good and fresh. We had lunch there once and it was OK, but I would prefer it to be my go to breakfast place. The interior is bright and cheery and the staff was attentive and friendly. I would recommend checking Johnny's out.

Sunday's are super busy but we found a table outside and didn't have to wait! Shrimp and grits are killer!! Also got the chicken Benedict. Omg the chicken was so flavorful. Seriously juicy! Are server was very helpful with helping us choose meals and we were more than satisfied!

Good basic breakfast but very pricey for what you get! The food at times borderlines bland. We ordered the shrimp & grits & were disappointed with its bland taste but all in all it has a wonderful atmosphere! Very friendly waitstaff!

Best Shrimp and Grits that I've tried yet. Ingredients included were fresh diced tomatoes, green onion, Applewood Bacon, all with a white wine creole cream sauce over the top. It was fantastic, and they didn't skimp on the shrimp. There was I believe 6 medium sized plump shrimp in there. I Love the Applewood bacon sprinkled in, nice touch, and the fact that they use Organic GMO free yellow corn grits is really appreciated and awesome! For those worried if it's spicy, do not fear, it's not spicy at all, but full of flavor. For those who love spicy like me, u can always add the hot sauce. The only reason I've been giving this place 4 instead of 5 stars is because they do not always cook their side potatoes made to order, and half of the times I've been here they've been cold. If that happens to u , make sure u ask for fresh ones because they are really great when fresh.

I enjoyed my lunch very much. I had the shrimp creole wrap. Everything was fresh the vegetable I had along with it was asparagus which was not hammered and cooked perfectly.

I live in Tampa and randomly discovered this place while googling "breakfast" once while in the area on another errand. Since then, I've been back regularly (about every other week) and don't exactly see that stopping anytime soon. The food here is amazing! It's original, fresh and done very well. I've been to all the popular brunch spots in South Tampa, and I would still prefer driving 30-45 minutes (that's about an hour and a half both ways!) for Johnny Grits. I usually just sit by myself at the diner bar, and the wait staff is really friendly and attentive, and they don't make me feel weird about eating alone regularly at all. They even remember me! Highlights: fried chicken benedict, the fiery grit bowl, the andouille bowl and (seriously!) the sweet potato pancake -- I get one every time I go there on the side as dessert. No syrup or honey even necessary.

This place is family friendly, very clean and nice ambience. We had breakfast and I ordered shrimp and grits plus the andouille sausage. Served with organic yellow grits (gluten free), a very tasty creole sauce that has the perfect level of spicy but not to spicy. Came with a fresh baked biscuit on the side. The portion was awesome, plenty of food and left full without finishing the whole thing. Our server was Dawn and she was very friendly and helpful.

Amazing. Service was more than awesome. Everyone takes care of your here. The food is fantastic. I got the fried chicken benedict. Can't really put into words how awesome it is. This could be the only meal on the menu and I would not care. Enjoy the grub

Holy. Moly. This place is amazing. The grits are, obviously, amazing. But what stole the show was the sweet potato waffles. Oh my goodness. They are the most fluffy, tasty, delicious waffles I've ever had. Incredible. The staff is attentive and friendly and there are clearly regulars that come here, which is always a good sign. This place is a "must try" breakfast joint. It will not disappoint.

You know, I like a place where you can walk in, sit down, and enjoy a menu with a wide range of reasonable prices. Good food and service are essential and expected. Do you like sangria? White truffle grits? Fried chicken benedict? Those are on the breakfast menu - served until 4pm. How about pasta purses stuffed with cheeses and pear puree, stuffed grouper, and southern fried chicken for dinner? Waiting for the meal to arrive was a challenge, because scanning the menu kept my mouth watering the whole time. The place was busy and the kitchen is small, so you don't want to be in a hurry. Coffee was refilled regularly, and the sangria sure looked good. My breakfast arrived hot and steaming, and I couldn't decide where to start first - the chicken or the egg? It didn't matter because both were delicious. There will be a next time.

Very good food. This was my first Tim here. All though the potatoes were over cooked I would get the breakfast bowl again.

We've been here about 5 times and every time we always leave very happy and full. The chicken and waffles were delicious, sausage gravy was the best I've ever had, the sweet potato pancakes were like dessert, and the sweet tea is on point! I do recommend!

This place is a total gem in Tarpon Springs. At first I was skeptical of a place that sounds so "country," and inside of a strip mall, but it was fresh, modern and clean. My mom and I split two of the "top 5" specialties here: the Johnny Banananananas and the Shrimp and Grits. They have so many options for grits it was unbelievable, but we decided to go this classic southern route first. The Johnny Banananas was a fluffy Belgian waffle with caramel sauce, pecans, REAL maple syrup, and of course, bananas. Awesome! The shrimp and grits were great, but not the best I've had. I felt like the sausage wasn't charred enough and would've been better sauteed with the shrimp. Still, it was delicious. Overall this place is a sunny way to start your day with lots of brunch-style options and a great deck outside i'd love to sit at next time. I will for sure go again!

Cute and delicious breakfast joint. They try to be high end, but miss the mark. Food is outstanding. Vanilla French toast is perfect. Shrimp and grits terrific. Coffee quite tasty, but served with prepackaged creamers. So tacky. Waitress have that country diner feel, but the place reads more upscale. Love the restaurant. Love the food, just always feels slightly disjointed at the direction they want to go.

I did not like grits! I am born again since my first spoonful of Shrimp and Grits last year in March when we found out about this gem of a Southern fresh restaurant. I was visiting Tarpon Spring again last week and I was there for four times. The food is as good as ever and you can probably read the other people's reviews and understand how good this place is. I would just like to show you how the plate looked like when my friend finished her Southern Chicken Hash. Please check out the picture I am going to post momentarily.

Great place for breakfast!! The grits with blue cheese crumbles and bacon was awesome! Staff is friendly and service was fast.

The menu promises great things by way of Southern cooking with some modern sensibilities. The menu items seemed designed with uncharacteristic healthiness in mind, in addition to an artisan mentality toward flavor composition and more. I was very excited to try it... OK... So far once again, the promise of Southern "cuisine" and not just "cooking" had to be reality checked. I had the signature "amazing" bowl of grits, poached eggs, bacon, cherry tomatoes and spinach. The grits were as promised delicious. The overall flavor of the dish was very good; however, when I ordered this healthy southern option I expected vegetables. What I got was garnishes. The poached eggs were cooked hard which was disappointing but forgivable. There was a tablespoon of minced spinach... one tablespoon. And I recall eating one cherry tomato though it was cut in half to spread the love I guess. The biscuit that came with it was silky and delicious. OK, so everything tasted good, but ONE cherry tomato and ONE tablespoon of spinach in a "bowl" that boasted these as full ingredients in this dish. Very upsetting. I told the waitress about my disappointment and she corrected me smartly and a tad condescendingly by insisting there were TWO cherry tomatoes. OK... perhaps in my zeal to tell her about my disappointment I exaggerated my experience by downsizing to ONE cherry tomato, but SERIOUSLY!!! THIS is condescension worthy to you? I said, that I was expecting vegetables when I ordered this, she responded by saying, "are you done?" Nice. OK... so her life is what it is, and I don't care much about what she wants in it either. Perhaps it's best I don't aggravate her or anyone there anymore with my exotic desire for more than a smattering of veggies in a breakfast bowl that promises veggies. Everything tasted good, but it would have been nice to have something to break up the OVERBEARING amount of starch in that dish. The organic yellow grits were good, but I really didn't want a cup and a half of them AND a biscuit with a two CHERRY tomato chaser and a tablespoon of spinach for color. Coffee was good. Water with lemon wedge was nice. Service was fast, overly efficient and apparently only perfunctory friendly. I wanted to love this place. Maybe I'll try it again after I try a few others in the area. But I don't trust their menu anymore. The dishes sound delicious and likely are for when you're not wanting something balanced or reasonably healthy. The ingredients they use are good, but the composition of this dish at least was way off.

We had a bit of a wait (30 mins) but it was well worth it. Had the shrimp n grits w andouille sausage and my son had the chicken and waffles. Everything was excellent and our waitress was very attentive and nice. I'm not local but I'll be back if we are in town again for sure!

Well... Overall great and for Palm Harbor -exquisite. But a few clunkers. The fried chicken is Delicious and worth tasting. Sadly I don't think they could purchase a smaller piece of chicken to fry. I'm not into huge portions or anything but I felt that his was kinda lacking. Went yesterday and ordered the fish and chips. Yes it was really good but looked and tasted nothing like any fish and chips I've ever had. 4 really small pieces of regularly fried fish. Not the typical hard shelled batter that most people think of. Again it was good but I was a bit disappointed. I will go back though cause the signature shrimp grits are crazy good. Big tender juicy perfectly cooked shrimp. And the servers are exceptional. Mixed bag but overall worth a try.

This is the best breakfast restaurant in the greater Tampa Bay Area. Unfortunately, word has spread and now the place is constantly packed with surly homosexuals from far and wide so it's hard to get a table. But with grits this good it was inevitable.

A review by my ten year old nephew. The food is great, and mostly natural and the people are really nice. Some restaurants are cluttered but this one has space to walk around the tables. Pancakes and potatoes were my favorite. Pancakes pancakes pancakes pancakes. I agree with everything he said.

This was an amazing little find for breakfast as we were passing through town...and they are pet friendly with a cute little porch out front. We ordered the famous shrimp n grits and added andouille sausage... it did not disappoint. It may be the best we have ever tried. We also had the jalapeño cheddar grits in a skillet which were unexpected and yummy. A mimosa completed the meal. Would highly recommend.

I really liked this place! I came here for breakfast with my family, totally over ordered and shared everything! We ordered 4 different Grit Skillets, We also had fried green tomatoes, chicken & waffles, sweet potato pancakes & a breakfast bowl. Everything was fresh and well prepared. The atmosphere was nice & clean. The portions were big & we left full & happy! Looking forward to coming back again!

I was excited to see the hole Nana's left was filled so quickly. Even more excited that they specialized in grits, since I am one. (Girl Raised In The South!) The shrimp and grits were recommended by our server but I was feeling more like breakfast. I ordered the eggs benedict and added a skillet of mushroom and white truffle grits. My bf got the fried chicken benedict. The eggs were completely cooked through on both of our dishes. I wished they were runnier. Other than that, not bad. The grits were tasty but needed a pinch of salt. I'm happy there is a new breakfast place in the area and look forward to trying more things off their menu

Absolutely my new favorite in the Tampa area! We had the southern chicken benedict...amazing. I even brought half home and warmed to two days later...still wonderful! My daughter had sweet potato pancakes...super yummy! However, didn't reheat too well, so eat them all in the restaurant!! Go if you can..we loved it!

Have eaten here many, many times and have taken quite a few out of town guests also. Wonderful food and service every time. The Fried Chicken Benedict is amazing! Sweet potato pancakes are delicious yet light! Haven't had a bad meal there once, and none of our guests have either. Best breakfast place I have ever been to.

Terrible customer service. I asked for my salad to be chopped and was told no they were too busy. I said okay cancel that that I know many places that would. Was told no, they would and of course they did not. Silly but annoying. Plus the salad was tiny and unimpressive.

  • Mike S.

The food here is awesome. Very southern menu which surprisingly there is not a lot of in the area. Always a fresh unique menu and always has fresh new specials. However the wait staff tends to hang out at the counter and complain about customers and their lack of tips. Apparently none of them realize their voices carry through the entire restaurant. It's a shame because it takes away from what otherwise would be an enjoyable experience.

Okay, I feel obligated to start with a disclaimer: I'm from California, studied at culinary school many years ago, and have worked in several food service businesses over the past 45-plus years. Having said that, let me take you through my meal at JG's. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We arrived as a party of eight, six adults and two children (a 6-month old and a 3-year old), and were seated fairly quickly waiting only for two tables to be pushed together and set up. About five minutes. So far so good. Our waitress was efficient and very accommodating; deserves high marks. I ordered a cappuccino which arrived covered with very thin foam and cinnamon. When I asked if they had some cocoa to sprinkle on top, the answer was no. Okay, I'm not a fan of cinnamon on my caps, but that's not a problem. The problem was that the coffee part was seriously weak, and tasted like regular house coffee rather than rich espresso. I've pulled a pretty fair number of espresso drinks in my time and realize that making a good one is not as easy as it seems. This one was just badly made. Two sips and I pushed it aside. The waitress willingly took it back, saying she would take it off the bill, and I asked for orange juice instead. The orange juice was fresh and very delicious. I ordered Crab Cake Benedict, described as eggs benedict, asparagus, lump crab, hollandaise sauce, and marked with a big "G" to designate "Amazing". There were exactly three small pieces of asparagus (roughly a single spear cut up) on the plate; not a terrible thing overall. BUT, the poached eggs were grossly overcooked and had the texture of ... well, seriously overdone hard-boiled eggs. Rubbery. Not one drop of creamy yolk. And if there was any hollandaise sauce on the plate, I couldn't find it. Plus, and this is unforgivable, the crab was clearly past its use-by date and grossly salty. I wound up eating one of the eggs, one bite of crab and both halves of the English muffin just because I was really hungry and knew it would be some time before I would have another meal that day. Now maybe I misread the menu, but I thought surely this would arrive with some grits. Nope. A heaping pile of greasy home fries. So I asked for a side of grits, something I totally love and order any time I get the opportunity. And since the name of the place suggests that grits are a major attraction, I really thought they would be spectacular. Nope. Watery. Tasty, yes, but watery; almost like "grits soup". Some of our party ordered omelets, which all arrived dry and flat rather than light and fluffy. The best thing on our table was the 3-year old's meal, fluffy waffles with fruit and a healthy mound of whipped cream. I wished that I had ordered that instead of what I got. While I'm willing to give slack here -- it may have been an off-day for the restaurant, or maybe the kitchen was overwhelmed -- there's no way I would risk another trip to Johnny Grits'. Unsatisfying breakfast for six adults and two children: $75, plus $20 tip. So, excellent waitress, really good OJ, really mediocre food. They might want to call on Gordon Ramsay to get straightened out.

I had my first order of shrimp and grits here over the weekend.. and I must say, it was definitely delicious. I also tried the chicken n waffles with a lovely coffee and mimosa. Be warned.. the mimosas are very strong ( the way I like it) and the service is so great it's almost sickening. Very trendy little space with tons of natural light and a very diverse group of patrons. I will most definitely be back!

Very pleased with the food here. Everyone had a very good meal. The Cobb salad was awesome, the pancakes were huge and delicious and the tomato soup was very good, especially with the grilled cheese dippers. We would definitely come to this spot more often if we lived a little closer to it. High marks for freshness. The only downside was they had Coke Zero instead of Diet Coke. LOL.

We used to go here when it was Nanna's restaurant , it was a good place to get breakfast or lunch, when it closed and reopened with new owners and a new name we were afraid we would not like it but to our surprise it's better, the place had a major much needed face lift, the food is very good and the staff couldn't be friendlier , great pancakes waffles.

I'm not a grits person but we wanted to tried this restaurant after seeing the great reviews. We enjoyed breakfast in the front patio with our dog. Kelli was an amazing waitress and so sweet with our pup. We started with 2 carafes of delicious fresh orange juice. I loved the fried chicken eggs Benedict. That might have been the best fried chicken I've ever had. The biscuit was light and fluffy, and the cheese sauce tied it all together. My husband ordered the crab cake Benedict and that was very good as well. We also tried the bacon and a sweet potato pancake. Both are highly recommended. It was busy, so you may want to make a reservation. I look forward to visiting again!

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Went here with great expectations. Biscuits were ordinary, margarine was served on the table. My wife always judges a restaurant by whether butter is served on the table and so do I. In a great restaurant, everything is in the details.

I was going to write a lengthy review about how much I love this place...but my food just came out so I'll keep it short and sweet! I've never had a bad experience here, nor have I ever had bad food here. It's always consistently delicious and the staff is amazing.

So glad that we stopped in! The shrimp & grits was seriously amazing. Perfectly cooked shrimp on top of a generous portion of creamy yellow grits in a sauce that nearly made me shed a tear upon the last bite. We also tried the sweet potato pancakes which were fluffy and delicious. The dining room is cozy, welcoming and well decorated. Fantastic food and friendly service for our large group of 17 will definitely have me stopping by next time I'm in the area.

The food here was amazing. My husband had the best shrimp and grits he's ever had and I really enjoyed that there were gluten-free options like the pancakes and grits! Few other perks are that the food is mostly organic, all natural no hormone which is how we eat at home so I felt great about everything we had.

How about an honest review? Well...let's start with their advertised HOMEMADE biscuits and gravy....I don't appreciate being lied to and especially paying $7 for CANNED gravy and STORE BOUGHT biscuits! I've purchased the same rundown breakfast a million times in every dive from here to Ruskin, FL for a $1.50! The service was slow and not considerate...I had to ask another waiter for a coffee refill. The grits were good...but so what? $32.00 for this? Really? I don't think so...

This was our first visit since Nana's closed down. It has a great feel, soft ambiance and welcoming decor. Our server Debra was attentive and informative, she recommended the house specialty shrimp and grits and said the steak and eggs was to die for! Shrimp and grits: very tasty and filling, my gf felt it was better suited for a late lunch early dinner rather than a breakfast. Steak and eggs: I asked for medium it was more medium-well/well it probably would have tasted better if it wasn't cooked so much. The eggs were eggs and the potatoes lacked any imagination. A very basic steak and eggs breakfast. Over all the visit wasn't horrible but it didn't knock or socks off either. We both felt the cost was just a bit high. Our server was great, no complaints with her. There was another server walking around with a huge hicky on her neck which was a bit off putting and unprofessional, there was also a rather Loud conversation regarding "bra's and sagging tits," although absolutely comical to listen too, i wouldn't have been happy if my children were with me...

Very clean restaurant, even smelled clean. Servers were friendly and helpful. Had the shrimp & grits with added andouille sausage and a side biscuit (rec'd by the server). It was good and a very plentiful portion. It was missing a wow factor though from other shrimp & grits dishes I've had. The biscuit was fantastic, not greasy and very light.

This place is freaking fantastic! I am a hard core breakfast person and I ate here for the 4 days we stayed. Everything was vary good. Fried chicken Benedict was off the hook good and the shrimp and grits were awesome! Place is clean, but some days the line was long.

Great food. Clean. Very happy with. Very friendly. Wanted a good place in tarpon springs and looked on yelp and went by the reviews. Not a grits person but loved the shrimp and grits. Will definitely go again and bring northern visitors for a great southern breakfast.

I like the atmosphere. The staff is very attentive. The food... Kinda bland. I ordered the truffle grits added Parmesan and carmelized onions. I didn't taste any truffle and there was no seasoning. I also ordered the eggs florentine, again bland no seasoning on that or the potatoes. I'll probably try it again but if it's bland I won't be going back.

We come here about twice a month but try other restaurants in the area. This morning we went to Toula's Trailside Cafe and I could not eat the Cajun Eggs Benedict as the eggs were hard boiled and the English Muffins were so hard they could not be cut with a knife. I came to Johnny Grits for lunch and had a great cheese burger and sweet potato fries. The best restaurant in the area.

We had a great breakfast here today. The place was very clean, and the staff was friendly. It's a family friendly spot - we brought our boys with us to eat. The shrimp 'n grits was fantastic and my husband enjoyed his breakfast bowl. We'll definitely be back again for lunch and dinner!

Fantastic food! Interminable wait on weekends but none during the week. Grits of every permutation were exceptional. Also had the fried chicken eggs Benedict which were amazing. Everything is flavorful and thought out. There are also diet options. Servers are also friendly. Decor is very fresh, just like the menu.

Nice place with a good atmosphere that is tucked away across the street from the college. Nice and clean place with a friendly staff. Food is well done and comes out quick. Prices for breakfast won't break the bank. Waitstaff is friendly and perky which is always a good thing. No ketchup on the tables was weird and the paper they cover the tables with was kind of annoying but all in all a good place for morning grub.

Based on Yelp reviews, my wife and I stopped in and, boy, are we glad we did! She had sweet potato pancakes, and I had the shrimp and grits, with andouille sausage. Amazing! We have a new favorite place! If only they were closer to Trinity.

Thank you Johnny Grits for adding a much needed culinary flare to the local dining scene. Your ingredients are fresh, your menu offers a tasty twist to classic southern dishes-- and the service is always great. From the fried chicken benedict to the diverse grits options and classic breakfast meals there is truly something for everyone at this hidden gem. I thought nothing could ever replace Nana's, but one meal at Johnny Grits made me a believer. Try it, you'll be glad you did.

My first visit to Johnny Grits and I loved it. A nice sleek redo of its predecessor Nana's that was very country. Had the fried chicken Benedict. Eggs were perfectly poached. Shared some shrimp and grits. Shrimp were large and fresh. Still had their tails on which was not an issue for me but might annoy some folks. Priced right - reasonable for portion size and quality. Definitely going back.

Went there for brunch the other day with a friend. We had never heard of it before so we decided to give it a try. The food was delicious and they give you a good amount for the money. My friend got the chicken and waffles and they give you two big pieces of chicken on top. I had an omelette and it was very good. The atmosphere is nice and quaint. I'd definitely go back, especially to try the lunch menu.

This is one of those reviews I have hesitated to leave ,because it's already becoming hard to get a seat in this great Breakfast/Lunch Spot in Tarpon Springs...at this point the word has clearly gotten out about the inventive dishes coming out of the kitchen with a lot of healthy farm to table type ingredients, so I figured it was time to do this...lets be honest; when you hear rumors of a joint that is doing interesting things with Breakfast it's on par with stories about Bigfoot..The Bermuda Triangle..and The Loch Ness Monster.. your immediately skeptical and need to see it in person before you become a "True Believer"...after going, I am now a believer ,which is amazing because Breakfast Places for me are about the only thing less exciting than going to a Rays Game...their Menu at Breakfast consists of wraps. omelets...fritattas...skillets....breakfast bowls...Benedicts..and Pancake Options all done with a bit of a Cajun Flair...than as the name implies they do a lot of stuff with grits, which really made me raise an eyebrow because The Bay Area is way far south of prime "Grits Country"..after sampling a few of their grits dishes, I can say they have some of the best grits I have ever had..they use a variety of Organic Grits from South Carolina that they have specially shipped in...standouts on the Breakfast Menu are The Fried Chicken Benedict..The Breakfast Bowl...Chicken and Waffles and unbelievably you can get Shrimp and Grits with Andoulle Sausage at 7 AM(which I did)..lol...The Lunch Menu has some excellent items as well, and on our last visit a fine Chicken Salad with Sweet Potato Fries and a Roast Beef Po Boy with Skillet Mac and Cheese were both tasty, but I still feel like Breakfast is where Johnny Grits shines the brightest...due to their truncated hours of being only open from 7 to 2 it is usually quite crowded, so when you come bring your patience ,because you will be rewarded with some stellar food...5 stars all the way for this off the beaten track find in Northern Pinellas...a must visit if your in The Bay Area and want something besides The Awful Waffle or I-SLOP

I DID NOT find the food that great. Had a simple breakfast: 2 over medium eggs, ham, potatoes & biscuit....ham was dry, 1 egg was broken & fully cooked. Biscuit was good. Waitress SLOWER than molasses...which is NOT a compliment. I was told "we have a new cook" OK he/she does not know how to cook eggs...not like I ordered a complicated meal

Delightful new breakfast spot! The food was excellent, and the decor and atmosphere were hip without being obnoxious. Service was ridiculously slow, 45 minutes to get our breakfast. However, I will chalk this up to teething problems and Sunday morning rush. Definitely a new breakfast staple after the Ozona Pig stopped it's Sunday morning breakfast.

What a pleasant surprise to find a place as creative and delicious as this in our area. Just heard about it here on Yelp and so wife and I tried it for breakfast. Great, freshly-made and so, so good. It was obvious that all of the ingredients were high-end and prepared with flair and pride. Our waitress, Melissa, was also fantastic. Very helpful and informative and a great spokesperson for the restaurant. Will definitely be back to our new favorite place.

Came in on a Sunday at noon. Just left at 1:50. What is wrong with this picture? Food service was so slow! I really wanted to like Johnny Grits but I can't. Get more people in the kitchen and servers that fill coffee and water more then once in two hours or you will lose more customers then just me! My food was made wrong so took even longer then my families. My sons food was supposed to be with fruit and came out with potatoes. Food was good though, otherwise it would have been one star. But it doesn't matter how good the food is if it takes an hour and a half to leave the kitchen.

Great neighborhood gem! Wife had been trying to get me here for a while and today was the first time I've been able to make it. Had the fried chicken eggs Benedict. Amazing. Service was great and the prices are very low for the great quality. Will definitely return.

Clean relaxing atmosphere and food that is exceptional. I recommend the chicken and waffles. The waffle was light and fluffy and the chicken had a unique and delicious breading.

Had lunch with my girlfriends after hearing about this place. Loved the decor and it was so clean (unlike the old Nana's). Ordered the Fried Chicken Benedict and HOLY COW this girl was not let down. Hands down my new favorite cafe and my go to meal!!!! Also ordered a bowl of oatmeal which I thought how could you possibly wow with this and have never had better oatmeal in a restaurant! Love it and can't wait to go back for more!

This new restaurant is awesome. Went for breakfast and had the sweet potato pancakes and a side of cheese grits. The food was great and so was the service. The decor is pleasant and clean. I would recommend to anyone.

It seems to me that the map show this restaurant east of Highway 19. It is west of Highway 19.
